So 20 years ago Tomoaki Nagao was watching the 1969 movie Planet of the Apes, and he suddenly thought ‘Hey this is a great idea for a cool new street wear clothing line’…Ok so maybe it didn’t go exactly like that but Nigo has stated that his original inspiration came from that movie, which is still pretty amazing considering the brand image. Now the actual naming of the brand seems to follow on from his inspiration, but it was in fact taken from the Japanese phrase which loosely translates to ‘A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water’. The whole statement is about the opulence of the modern Japanese teenager, and it’s those people who are the BAPE customer, a brand which was built around the laziness and defiance of Japanese tradition (which includes spending too much time in the bath!).

BAPE was born and as the first real street wear brand it thrived and became a cult name all over the world. It is a symbol of street culture and before Nigo knew it huge hip hop and R n B artists were donning his collections. His friendship with such performers even led to a co-owners with Pharrell Williams in his two brands Billionaire Boys Club and Icecream – two brands which we already love led us to stocking BAPE

Mr Bathing Ape is the collection from Nigo which he created to express his love of tailoring but still rebells against tradition with it’s garish prints and patterns. This collection was made for someone who loves to stand out, the beautiful tailoring of the jackets and shirts are magnified by a clash of defiant patterns that feel like they shouldn’t work but they do. Our buyer has picked out some key pieces which not only reflect this seasons trend of camo and tailoring, but create adds a splash of dapper to the typical street style look. We have a great selection of men’s t-shirts, shirts and polos, all which scream BAPE and that unique Nigo design.
