There’s nothing new about the popularity of Italian brands not just in Britain but across the world, at the end of the day they’ve produced some of the great designers and continue to influence the way we dress. However, Italian brand Paul & Shark is still pretty much a newbie here at JA, and since it’s arrival last season it’s been well reviewed and continues to grow. Now for those of you who are new to Paul & Shark I’ll give you the low down on who they are and what makes their products worthy of the great JA. You can trace them back to the early 1900s but it wasn’t until 1977 when Paul & Shark was actually born, and the story behind it begins with a trip to the marina by founder Paulo. By this time the factory he owned in Italy had been producing knitwear for some of the most prestigious brands in the world like Balenciaga and Dior, however the inspiration for his label came from his love of yachting. Sat in the harbour was a yacht that had the name Paul & Shark on the mask, Paul being the English translation of Paulo and with his personal interest in sailing, the brand was born. Now 30 years on it’s Paulo’s son Andrea who’s heads up the brand and has been responsible for it’s global expansion, with a new store just launched in Hong Kong it really has become an international brand.

The reason we love it is because of the amazing technology behind their garments. All of the men’s knitwear produced is made from a 3 in 1 yarn which incorporates 3 winning aspects for us; water repellence, machine washable and non-pilling wool. Having these 3 qualities makes a Paul & Shark a true investment piece, if you don’t have to deal with all the usual issues you get with wool like shrinking and pilling, you wont need to replace it for a good few years. Another HUGE factor which everyone should love, is the fact that EVERYTHING is made in the factory in Italy and by the original family making it a truly Italian brand.

It’s not just JA who’re jumping on the Paul & Shark band wagon, GQ Style magazine did a feature on the brand for their AW13 collection. ‘Beyond The Sea’ displays the younger aspect of the brand, using the ‘striking polos and technical sportswear’ as examples on how to get that luxury casual wear style. Although Paul & Shark take their inspiration from the yachting world which is typically stereotyped as something for the older gentleman, they’ve redesigned the classics by creating a more fitted shape that’s usually favoured by the younger market. The Shark Fit is just one aspect which is drawing a mix of patrons in, and after seeing the SS13 collection I can safely say there’s a little something for everyone – it’s an exciting range.

It’s the innovation and homespun quality of the products that we love so much with water repellent knitwear, classic casual polos and amazing pieces like the Football Jacket (which features a chargeable heat pad which lasts the length of a football), it’s definitely a brand to watch out for in the coming seasons.
