It’s not new to us nor is it particularly impressive with regards to it’s design, but it’s a favourite amongst all of us and the one constant throughout the decades. It was only in the past few years where the popularity of mens denim seemed to have faded away with the introduction of the smarter European look of the Chino. Alas we should never have doubted it, if it can survive the horrific his and hers denim incidence of 2001 (which we will forever judge Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears for), then it can pick itself up and push the Chino back out of the limelight.

Yes there have been some low points over the years, the pale blue high waisted jeans of the 80s and the epic flares of the 70s but over the past ten years or so we’ve seen denim settle into it’s own style. The all American denim shirt came back in and to be honest it’s been a huge hit, something that was typically associated with the older market has now transferred to become the uniform of the young hipsters. Looking at this season we’re still seeing chinos in burgundy, emerald and navy paired with blazers and brogues, but we’re also seeing a strong mix of denims styled up for both smart and casual looks.

Now you may have noticed that this year we’re wearing our jeans slightly differently, with the introduction of the roll ups. It all started this summer with chinos being rolled up with loafers and deck shoes to show off some bare ankle, and for this AW it’s been adapted to wear with boots and brogues. For a smarter look go for a darker denim in a straight cut and layer it up with a shirt, jumper and blazer perfect for this transitional time of year. To finish off the look it’s best to pair it with either brogues or wing-tips, this really dresses up the jeans and will transform it to an effortless smart ensemble. Jeans will forever be a casual piece of clothing, so styling it is simple just stick to the basics and go for comfort with flannel shirts and woolly jumpers paired with either a classic trainer or a pair of lace up boots.
There isn’t a specific style of jean you should be looking at this season, it’s very much an anything can go kinda trend (except when it comes to white washed jeans – which are a massive no no) with a mix of dyes and shapes it’s easy to find something you like. I would always say stick to the slightly darker shades in the winter months with dark indigos and blacks, but for watching the football or meeting up for casual drinks go with worn and distressed jeans in a slightly lighter dye. Whether you want to wear your jeans roll up with a pair of fairilse socks and brogues or with your favourite trainers that’s completely up to you, this season it’s all about the versatility of denim and getting jeans back as the essential piece of your wardrobe.
