It’s getting very close to being officially winter, with December marking that point between the leaves changing colour, to them falling off and leaving everything bare (which also marks the point where it becomes a hazzard wearing any smooth soled shoes). It may look a little bleak out there but it doesn’t mean that our style needs to reflect it. Since September we’ve been prepping for this moment; stocking up on the woolly jumpers, actually wearing socks once more and re-learning how to layer up. Most of our wardrobes have already made the update but for those who are still wondering how to adapt their daily attire for the colder months, here’s a little inspiration with 4 distinct looks for 4 different occasions….

SOMETHING FOR WORK
When it comes to work we need to remain fairly presentable but we’ve also got to respond to the fact that it’s a hell of a lot colder out there. Thicker blazer jackets need to be brought in to counteract the change in temperature, so look towards the traditional tweeds, herringbone or even velvet if your feeling particularly debonair. Whereas in the summer we usually just stick to a single layer, it’s now time to layer up with a fine knit (or chunky if your office is freezing) over our shirts. Scarves need to be worn as much as possible during this season, so of course you’ll need one of those for the chilly mornings and evenings.

SOMETHING FOR A WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY
A lot of us spend time in the country during the festive months, whether you’re heading home to see the family or just catching up with old friends before the end of the year, it’s a weekend where you need to pack accordingly. No fashion conscious male worth his own salt can visit the British countryside without a Barbour jacket to hand – it’s practically a legal requirement (that’s coming from someone who lives in Bath). Another essential is a a chunky jumper or my personal favourite, a quarter zip pullover. A hat and scarf is common sense, as is a good pair of sturdy boots to wear on all those long walks.

SOMETHING FOR THE PUB
You need to make the right amount of effort when it comes to casual environments. It shouldn’t be so relaxed that you can’t tell the difference between what you were wearing for a night on the sofa to what you wear to the pub, but you also don’t want to look like you’ve got lost on your way to the Oscars. A polo shirt is so versatile that when it comes to the casual occasions it’s often the fail safe. For winter why not switch it up to a long sleeved knitted polo? A leather jacket is yet again always acceptable wherever you go, so it’s my first choice for a night in the pub.

SOMETHING FOR A FANCY OCCASION
It’s festive season which means that it’s party season (Tis the season to get drunk at my works party and all that). A beautiful dark navy suit is always going to be well received, paired with a festive coloured shirt and a nice tie…well you’re definitely going to be belle of the ball in such a dapper ensemble. Again this is the perfect excuse to get a scarf out, it’s a very sophisticated touch finishing off a suit with a fine scarf draped around your neck. Give it a whirl.
