THE REPORT

sunspel

These guys are a fantastic ambassador for British craftsmanship and a great example of how versatile the fashion industry is here in the UK. Sunspel was new to the JA portfolio in Spring 14 and after a positive response from our customers, it was clear that this brand was going to be a keeper. This is a label which know how to do the basics, and how to do them well. Sunspel has built it’s identity around the concept of producing only simple everyday clothing from well-made beautiful fabrics – which were created in their Long Eaton factory as far back as 1937.

For those who missed the introduction back at the beginning of the year, here’s a quick synopsis of Sunspel….Founded in 1860 by Thomas A Hill, the company has always been revolutionary with it’s ideas on innovative fabrics and the simplicity of clothing. They scraped the traditional wool used for underwear and swapped it for a soft lightweight cotton, which led their rise to becoming a leader within the industry. Sunspel supplied drawers for the RAF and at the same time sat front row in the finest boutiques across the world -a company who know their roots. Over the years the ingenious fabrics have been spilling out of the Long Eaton factory, using only the best raw materials to create their new materials. Sunspel made a big splash in the pool of mens fashion in ’06 when Daniel Craig made his debut at 007 in the hit film Casino Royale. The costume designers called upon the British brand to create a polo shirt for Bond to wear, so using their vintage Q75  fabric they designed the Riviera polo.

Well it’s clear that this is a fashion label which lives for producing those staple pieces that should appear in every man’s wardrobe. If you’re on the hunt for your new classic white t-shirt – that you know will be worn to death – I would advise taking Sunspel for a spin. The brand’s product portfolio consists of t-shirts, sweats, shirts and polos, all things which we rely on on a daily basis. If you’re not sure on how to introduce this simplistic style into your wardrobe, we’ve put together a few ideas to get those outfit ideas going….

Wear Sunspel….On the fairway

Golf is a very style aware sport, one where all eyes are on you and nothing but your swing to distract viewers from your choice of attire. Obviously the summer is long gone but the short sleeved riviera polo would be a cracking piece for an afternoon spent on the green – during the winter we simply layer up and throw on a J Lindeberg knit over the top. The other more winter appropriate style would be the long sleeved merino knit polo. It still oozes that classic sharp style, but has the added warmth and protective barrier against the chill.

Wear Sunpel….For Sunday lounging

Sundays should be partly spent in comfort. You slouch around the house or pop out for a coffee and croissant in your lounge wear, and only when time has come to leave for the in-laws do you begrudgingly pull on your jeans once more. The supersoft loopback cotton is ideal to pair up with your favourite sweatpants, but just as easy to wear over a shirt for that balanced smart vs casual look.

Wear Sunspel….Every day

I have at least one black, one white and one grey crew neck t-shirt, all of which are worn every week without fail. Sunspel offers a luxury touch to a basic item of clothing, so pairing it up under a shirt or jumper feels just as good as it looks. The 100% Egyptian cotton fabric content is the first sign that it will become the best t-shirt you’ll ever wear. Available in both plain classic shades as well as the equally versatile and essential stripe.
