One of Britain’s greatest exports, Paul Smith is a designer that collectively promotes our traditions and heritage in his collections but modernises it so that it appeals to a wide and varied market. Paul Smith is the kind of label that both you, your Dad and your kid brother could all be wearing at the same time. There are very few men’s fashion brands that have the ability to reach such a huge group of generations. The pre A16 collection has just dropped and there’s been a few changes, we’re here to talk you through them….
Don’t fret nothing major has changed, the designs still follow the same principle he set down in the 70s, but you will notice a few things amiss. The diffusion lines have always been split between the more formal and heavily tailored PS by Paul Smith collection, and the off-duty casual denim range of Paul Smith Jeans. This has now been simplified. The two collections have amalgamated under the PS by Paul Smith name, bringing both lines together under one name.
With this change comes a new logo. Even though the name remains, the PS by Paul Smith collection as we once knew it been dissipated. Gone are the striped zebras and PS scripts, now it’s all about the Tao symbol. Long time collaborator and cult graphic designer Fergus Purcell designed the new PS logo with the intention of conveying the duality of the line – for those who don’t know their Chinese symbols, Tao is supposed to signify the two sides of the world. So it’s pretty well suited to represent the two sides of this diffusion line. It’s a bold and confident design, one which I’m sure will become international recognised very quickly. It looks pretty cool in contrasting colours on the polos and sweats too.
PS by Paul Smith continues to reference that dry sense of humour we’re known for, slightly eccentric but not crazy. You’ll still find a strong and consistent tailoring influence along with chambray shirts, 100% cotton t-shirts, super soft sweats and the signature Paul Smith denim jeans. The collection basically gives you everything you need for a strong everyday wardrobe.
